The Far West LHD Media Unit is responsible for all media inquiries and interviews with Far West LHD staff members. The Unit regularly advises on major public health issues and disease outbreaks, through media releases, media conferences and, sometimes, special telephone hotlines.

The Media Unit is the primary point of contact for news organisations. All media enquiries must come through the Media Unit in the first instance. This includes:

  • Requests for interviews
  • Photo requests of staff, patients or our facilities
  • General enquiries about health issues
  • Any condition updates on patients who have been injured in an accident or are otherwise of interest to the media

Please do not call our hospitals directly as they are not allowed to provide this information.

Staff are not permitted to speak to journalists or representatives of media organisations without the knowledge or permission of the Media Officer.

An On-Call Media Officer is available after normal business hours to assist media with urgent enquiries. This is organised on a roster basis and the correct person to contact is available via a voicemail message on 0411 119 592.

Three New Members Appointed To Far West Lhd Board


Dr Andrew Refshauge, Board Chair, Far West Local Health District today welcomed three new members to the District’s Board.

“I am delighted that Ms Pamela Tucker, Mr Justin Files and Mr Jason Masters will be joining our Board,” Dr Refshauge said.

Ms Pamela (Pam) Tucker is actively involved in the Broken Hill community. She is a committee member of the Community Round Table, Lead Reference Group and Community Grants Committee of the Broken Hill City Council and a Community Member representative on the FWLHD Palliative Care and End of Life Steering Committee. Ms Tucker has a strong interest in understanding local issues and representing the Far West local community.  She is qualified in Business Administration, Community Services and Information Technology with over 45 years’ experience in the multi resource industry.

Mr Justin Files was born in Broken Hill and was raised in Menindee; belonging to the largest kinship group of the Barkindji Nation. Mr Files has been an advocate at the local, state, national and international level for Aboriginal health and wellbeing for the past 20 years. He is passionate about advocating and promoting self-determination and better health outcomes for the Aboriginal communities of the Far West. Mr Files has 18 years of extensive Executive Health Manager experience in Aboriginal Health in Far West NSW in which he has been involved in research collaborations and has been a keynote speaker and presenter on Aboriginal Health issues nationally and internationally.

Mr Jason Masters is a Chair and Non-Executive Director (NED) with over 15 years’ experience. Mr Masters has served on the board of approximately 20 private, public and not-for-profit organisations, has primary NED experience in governance, audit, risk, technology and finance. Mr Masters has a connection to Broken Hill and the region; his grandfather was born and retired to Broken Hill and, in his youth, he regularly spend school holidays in Broken Hill.  He has personal experience with minority communities, as a person with a disability and a member of the LGBTIQ community. He has held roles in numerous sectors, including health (service delivery, advocacy, regulator, cemeteries and crematorium), technology, utilities and infrastructure; transport and logistics; financial services. He is a frequent domestic and international speaker on director development, technology, audit, risk, finance, probity and procurement and is a Fellow and Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Dr Refshauge welcomed the new members to the Board and the contribution they will make.

“I have no doubt that the skills and experience of our three new Board members will add tremendous value to the Board,” said Dr Refshauge.

“I believe the incoming Board members have the passion and experience to successfully support the Board’s oversight of health services for our local communities now and into the future.”

The new Board members join current members Dr Andrew Refshauge (Chair), Ms Mariette Curcuruto, Mr Wincen Cuy, Ms Michelle Dickson, Dr Lilon Bandler, Mr Paul Kemp and Ms Sally Pearce.

Dr Refshauge paid tribute to outgoing Board members, John Harris and Stephen O’Halloran.

“John Harris and Stephen O’Halloran have served as our Board members since 2011 respectively and with distinction,” he said.

The incoming Board members will serve a three-year term OR serve until 31 December 2024.
