Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment

The Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment has come a successful finish with new Broken Hill Community Health Centre in Crystal Street – the centrepiece of the NSW Government’s $30 million project – officially opened on 26 November 2018.

The Centre was declared open by the Local Member for Barwon, Mr Kevin Humphries MP, on behalf of the NSW Minister for Health, the Hon. Brad Hazzard, MP.

“I am delighted to be here in Broken Hill to declare open one of the most exciting capital infrastructure projects in recent times for the Far West Local Health District. The Broken Hill Community Health Centre will provide first-class health facilities for people in Broken Hill and the Far West,” said Mr Kevin Humphries.

The Centre opened for business on 2 July 2018, and co-locates the LHD’s Dental, Family and Child and associated services to provide more accessible services for the community.

“By providing a one-stop shop, this new integrated model of care will increase efficiency and help meet demand. The Centre is also better equipped to provide dental services with three new chairs and an ongoing commitment to the partnership between the LHD and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The new Centre is focussed on meeting the diverse health needs of the community, both through service provision and from an innovative Aboriginal arts and culture strategy,” said Mr Humphries.

He added the Centre reflects the community’s Aboriginal heritage through signage, art and design. “It has been a positive collaboration between the health service, the builders, local artists and the art fraternity including fantastic assistance from the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery.”

New administration offices on the second floor will enable the Far West LHD to attract and retain a skilled workforce by meeting their needs in a safe, purpose-built facility.

The BHHS Redevelopment concluded with work finishing on the reconfiguration of the Broken Hill Hospital’s ambulatory care wing in December, which had enabled expansion of the cancer care services and consolidation of patients’ waiting areas.

The official party for the plaque unveiling were (left) Aboriginal Elder Maureen O’Donnell (with her sister Barbara Clark) with Kevin Humphries MP, Member for Barwon, and Far West LHD Board Chair Dr Andrew Refshauge, Mayor Darriea Turley AM and Mr Greg Barlow, Director Project Delivery for Health Infrastructure.
