The Far West LHD Media Unit is responsible for all media inquiries and interviews with Far West LHD staff members. The Unit regularly advises on major public health issues and disease outbreaks, through media releases, media conferences and, sometimes, special telephone hotlines.

The Media Unit is the primary point of contact for news organisations. All media enquiries must come through the Media Unit in the first instance. This includes:

  • Requests for interviews
  • Photo requests of staff, patients or our facilities
  • General enquiries about health issues
  • Any condition updates on patients who have been injured in an accident or are otherwise of interest to the media

Please do not call our hospitals directly as they are not allowed to provide this information.

Staff are not permitted to speak to journalists or representatives of media organisations without the knowledge or permission of the Media Officer.

An On-Call Media Officer is available after normal business hours to assist media with urgent enquiries. This is organised on a roster basis and the correct person to contact is available via a voicemail message on 0411 119 592.

Students Start Their Traineeships With Popular Sbats Program At Far West Lhd


The Far West Local Health District is pleased to be welcoming 17 students from across the far west region to start their school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SBAT) program this week.

The SBAT program gives students an opportunity to start their health career by participating in workplace learning while completing their HSC. The SBAT will be completed over the next two years with support from the health service; TAFE and high schools to ensure the SBATs finish successfully.

The SBAT program is an initiative of the Department of Education and Communities providing Year 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to gain an industry recognised certificate.

The SBAT program has been very successful for the health service and this cohort will be the fifth to commence. This year also sees a growth in the program with 17 SBAT’s commencing in nursing; allied health; administration; warehousing; and hotel services.   

Students and their parents will be attending the Orientation day today (Tuesday, 12 February 2019) which involves welcoming students to the health service and providing information regarding the traineeship including: work placement; uniforms; and expectations of trainees. Information is provided by the NSW Department of Education; the Apprenticeship Support Australia; the Department of Industry NSW and the Broken Hill TAFE.

During their two year traineeship the students will attend Broken Hill TAFE to complete their classroom learning to obtain their certificate. Broken Hill TAFE will be using face to face classes as well as a variety of different technologies to teach and maintain regular contact with the students and their trainers.

The Far West LHD looks forward to working with the students; their parents; the Broken Hill TAFE; the Department of Education; the high schools and the Industry NSW for successful traineeships that will help to build the future workforce for our health services and community.
