The Media Officer for Far West LHD is Branko Licul on 0411 119 592 or email branko.licul@health.nsw.gov.au

The Media Unit is the primary point of contact for news organisations. All media enquiries must come through the Media Unit in the first instance. This includes:

  • Requests for interviews
  • Photo requests of staff, patients or our facilities
  • General enquiries about health issues
  • Any condition updates on patients who have been injured in an accident or are otherwise of interest to the media

Please do not call our hospitals directly as they are not allowed to provide this information.

Staff are not permitted to speak to journalists or representatives of media organisations without the knowledge or permission of the Media Officer.

An On-Call Media Officer is available after normal business hours to assist media with urgent enquiries. This is organised on a roster basis and the correct person to contact is available via a voicemail message on 0411 119 592.

Celebrate Being Smoke Free This World No Tobacco Day

Far West Local Health District is encouraging people to celebrate being smoke free this World No Tobacco Day (31 May) which aims to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco use.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is "Tobacco and heart disease” and on the impact tobacco has on the cardiovascular health of people worldwide.

Tobacco use is an important risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) kill more people than any other cause of death worldwide, and tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure contribute to approximately 12% of all heart disease deaths. Tobacco use is the second leading cause of CVD, after high blood pressure.

An information stall for World No Tobacco Day will be held in the Broken Hill Hospital foyer tomorrow (Thursday 31 May) from 10am to 2pm. Staff will be on hand with information and advice for people about smoking and quitting, Quitline and NRT (nicotine replacement therapy). The Far West LHD’s GUS and Quit for New Life programs will also be promoted.

The ‘GUS’ – Give Up Smoking for Mums, Bubs and Families – program aims to reduce the rates of smoking in pregnant women who attend the Broken Hill Hospital for antenatal and postnatal care. Quit for New Life encourages pregnant mums to quit smoking, targeting women who identify as having an Aboriginal baby.

The Far West LHD had its first public premiere of one of its Quit for New Life projects in Wilcannia on Tuesday night – the showing of a rap song/video called ‘River Down’ created and performed by Wilcannia locals to help raise awareness about smoking amongst Aboriginal women during pregnancy. The video was well received by all in attendance at the public viewing.

If you want help to quit smoking, call Quitline on 13 78 48 or chat to your Aboriginal Health Worker or GP.
