Kidney Health Week - Educational Seminar For Local Health Professionals

Educational seminar for local health professionals

Kidney Health Week – 5-11 March 2018

As part of Kidney Health Week local health professionals will be gathering to hear the latest education and management of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that could help them improve health outcomes for people living with the disease and reduce the burden of CKD in the community.

Kidney Health Week (5-11 March) helps raise awareness about kidney health across Australia. One in three people living in Australia is at increased risk of kidney disease, and 90% of kidney function can be lost without experiencing any symptoms.

The Far West LHD and Primary Health Network Western NSW have joined forces with Kidney Health Australia to host a seminar in Broken Hill on Monday, 5 March titled “Management Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease, Disease Progression and Complication”.

“Chronic Kidney Disease presents a significant health problem in Australia and it is an important contributor to morbidity and mortality in the Australian population,” said Ms Penny Griffin, Clinical Nurse Consultant Renal Services, Far West LHD.

“By providing education on the detection and management of CKD, we have the opportunity to empower primary health care professionals, improve health outcomes for individuals living with CKD, and reduce the burden of CKD in the community,” she said.

“It’s also an opportunity to impact on other chronic disease outcomes. CKD, cardiovascular disease and diabetes share many risk factors, such as high blood pressure, obesity, and smoking. There are also complex causal relationships between these conditions.

“I urge all health professionals to take advantage of this seminar,” said Ms Griffin.

Supported by Kidney Health Australia, the seminar is presented by Renal Physician Dr Namrata Khanal and targets GPs, Registrars, nurses, pharmacists, medical students, specialists, Allied Health professionals and other interested health professionals.

Topics covered include defining goals for best practice management of CKD, appropriate management for complications and implementing a practice-based system for patient safety, to identify patients at higher risk of CKD for a kidney health check.
