Daughters Donate To Palliative Care

The Broken Hill Community Palliative Care Team recently received a very generous donation from Lucy and Emma Hurst in memory of their father Rod who was cared for at home by his wife Tracy, daughters Lucy (24) and Emma (21), and supported by the local Palliative Care team. Rod passed away at home in December surrounded by his family, as was his wish.

Melissa Cumming, Director Cancer and Palliative Care at Far West LHD said: “For over two months these incredible young ladies sold beauty products and collected donations from the Broken Hill community, raising an incredible $2,161 for the Palliative Care Service”.

Lucy and Emma were full of praise about their experience with the Palliative Care Service:

“Having experienced not only the care of our Dad, but the overall time and effort that is put into Palliative Care in Broken Hill, it was without thought that if we could we would help someone else receive the same love and support we did in the last few months of Dad’s life. Without palliative care, the equipment we required to care for Dad would have come at extraordinary cost to our family and maintaining his pain relief would have been impossible outside the hospital. The Palliative Care Team not only allowed memories to be made for our family, but allowed us to understand how much love and care can be experienced within our Broken Hill community. We are so thankful for all the extra time, laugher and joy we had with Dad in his last few months in his home, in front of the TV with his phone - just where he wanted to be.”

Ms Cumming, on behalf of the Palliative Care team, sincerely thanked Lucy and Emma for their support, and said that the donated funds will be used to purchase equipment for palliative care patients in the Broken Hill community.
