Quit For New Life Smoking Cessation Media Resources Launch

Media resources created with the help of local Aboriginal residents will be premiered at a community event in Broken Hill. The resources have been designed to help reduce smoking amongst the region’s Aboriginal population and particularly women smoking during pregnancy.

The Broken Hill Aboriginal Community Working Party will show one of the video clips at their annual Christmas barbecue, which will be held in Sturt Park (near the Children’s playground) on Thursday, 7 December starting at 6.30pm to 8.30pm.  The Broken Hill Aboriginal Community Working Party has been included in all stages of the consultation process and their endorsement of the project is an important aspect of community engagement.

The resources – a video clip, video/song and audio grabs - will be used for the ‘Quit for New Life’ smoking cessation program in the Far West LHD. It’s primary aim is to reduce the incidence of Aboriginal women smoking during pregnancy.

The project was funded under the state-wide NSW Government initiative Quit For New Life (QFNL) Program that aims to address the issue of smoking during pregnancy.

Currently the rate of Aboriginal women who smoke during pregnancy in the far west of NSW is around 70% in comparison to non-Aboriginal women which is currently around 25%, said Ms Rebecca Crawford, Health Promotion Officer, Far West LHD.

The short video clip and video/song were created earlier this year for Far West LHD by Desert Pea Media (DPM) at community workshops held in Broken Hill and Wilcannia involving Aboriginal residents.

The DPM workshops also provided the opportunity and tools to engage Aboriginal people to participate and understand the cultural and social issue at play in their communities around smoking.

“DPM and FWLHD staff supported participants in a discussion about the issues around smoking in pregnancy, the impact on the mother, baby and family. Part of the discussion was about making positive choices and what they could do to improve their health and wellbeing.” said Ms Crawford.

The Quit for New Life media resources will be used in a local health promotion campaign on radio, social media and youtube.

A showing of the video rap song created in the Wilcannia Aboriginal community will be launched at a later date.
