Far West Lhd Nurses Win Top Awards In Nsw Excellence In Nursing Awards

An Assistant in Nursing and a Registered Midwife at Broken Hill Hospital have taken out top honours in the fifth annual NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

Bailey Stubing and Danielle Toigo were among 12 outstanding nurses and midwives who received awards from the Minister for Health Brad Hazzard at a ceremony on Thursday (September 14) at Parliament House.

Bailey won the Excellence in Nursing/Midwifery – Assistant In Nursing/Midwifery Award. He has been an Assistant in Nursing since 2015 and works in the Medical Ward at Broken Hill Hospital. He is described by his peers as a caring, compassionate and kind nurse who forms strong therapeutic relationships with all patients.

Danielle won the Excellence in Midwifery – Registered Midwife Award. She commenced nursing at Broken Hill Hospital in 2009 as an Assistant in Midwifery and has since become a clinical midwifery specialist and team leader of the Midwifery Group Practice. She is kind and compassionate and leads her team with passion and conviction ensuring quality continuity of care for women.

Ms Dale Sutton, FWLHD Director Nursing and Midwifery, congratulated the winners and said it was fantastic recognition for the nurses as well as for Far West LHD.

“It was fantastic, everybody cheered and the Minister Brad Hazzard and Susan Pearce (Acting Secretary NSW Health) presented the trophies and constantly talked about how fantastic it was for them and for Far West. The nurses were very proud and so are we!”

Ms Sutton said the congratulations for the winning nurses and finalists after the awards continued well into the night and many commented that Far West and Broken Hill is leading the state in producing fantastic nurses.

“It’s a fantastic message to nurses who may wish to work in Far West, absolutely. Everyone was talking about us and coming up to us and praising us for the great stuff coming out of Broken Hill. Once nurses across the state hear about this, they’ll come!”

Ms Sutton said Danielle Toigo’s win also put the Midwifery Group Practice program at the BH Hospital Maternity Unit in the headlights. “At least 10 different midwives approached Danielle after the awards and asked about Broken Hill and the MGP Program”.

Both Bailey and Danielle were also the Far West LHD Excellence in Nursing Award winners for 2017 in their respective disciplines – AIN and Registered Midwife.

Two other Far West LHD nurses were finalists but unfortunately missed out - Scarlett Pollet in the Excellence in Nursing/Midwifery Graduate Award category and Sasha Carlaw in the Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Award category. Scarlett was Far West LHD’s 2017 winner in the Excellence in Nursing / Midwifery – Graduate Registered Nurse Award and Sasha was Far West LHD’s 2017 Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Award winner, sharing honours with Tiffany Cattermole.
